Connected vehicles can make our downtown Tampa roadways safer, our commutes smoother and our entire transportation system more environmentally friendly. This vision is becoming a reality through public participation and the hard work of the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority and its partners. Participants in the THEA Connected Vehicle Pilot are aiding this exciting research project in three ways:
1. Drivers
What We’re Testing
Over 1,000 drivers have had an enhanced rearview mirror installed in their cars that is designed to display safety messages and issue audio alerts. Their cars communicate with other participating connected vehicles, traffic signals and more, with the goal of safer commutes across the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway and Downtown Tampa.
2. Pedestrians
What We’re Testing
The THEA Connected Vehicle Pilot is improving pedestrian safety at the midblock crosswalk on East Twiggs Street near the Hillsborough County Courthouse. Advanced LIDAR sensors deployed on either side of East Twiggs Street detect pedestrians in the crosswalk, while additional roadside equipment broadcasts that information to connected vehicles in the vicinity, and their drivers receive an alert.
